MIT Study Rules Out Neutrino Laser on Bose-Einstein Condensate
MIT physicists Wolfgang Ketterle, Hanzhen Lin and Yu-Kun Lu show in two Physical Review Letters papers that a 2025 proposal for a neutrino laser from radioactive Bose-Einstein condensate cannot work. Atomic recoil and the fermionic nature of neutrinos each independently kill the scheme.
- The scheme was proposed in 2025 by Joe Formaggio (MIT) and Ben Jones
- Decay neutrinos carry about 1 MeV, a million times a photon's energy
- Recoil sends the atom flying at roughly Mach 10
- Neutrinos being fermions suppress rather than amplify emission
