Nuclear fuel recycling could cut US waste storage from 100,000 years to hundreds
The US plans to add 300 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050 and is developing spent fuel recycling. Argonne National Laboratory is working on pyroprocessing, which could cut radioactive waste storage from hundreds of thousands of years to hundreds.
- US runs 94 light-water reactors at ~100 GW, about 20% of electricity
- Target: +300 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050
- Pyroprocessing cuts need for new uranium and waste volume
- ANL partners with Deep Isolation, Oklo and SHINE Technologies
