Subarctic Caterpillars Rewrote Cloud-Seeding Chemistry, Study Finds
A study in Communications Earth & Environment confirmed that a 2023 moth outbreak in Abisko, Sweden, changed the blend of birch BVOCs that seed Arctic clouds. Current Earth-system models do not include this biotic climate feedback.
- Measurements covered 256 birch trees across the 2021, 2022 and 2023 growing seasons
- Defoliation raised the share of highly reactive sesquiterpenes in tree emissions
- Peak emissions came early in the season, not at maximum caterpillar feeding
- SOA accounts for over half of cloud condensation nuclei in remote regions
