Utah clears first autonomous prescription system without doctor approval
Utah has approved a pilot by Nolla Health that lets an AI system issue initial acne prescriptions without prior physician sign-off, using a questionnaire and facial scans. Autonomy rolls out in stages: a doctor approves the first 100 prescriptions, then reviews 500 retrospectively, then samples weekly. The Nolla Derm app is open to Utah residents 18 and older from $4.99 per month.
- A physician approves the first 100 prescriptions, then 500 are reviewed after issuance
- The system picks only from a physician-approved list of topical treatments
- Nolla says clinicians agree with its recommendations in over 96% of cases
- The app has 175,000+ downloads across 44 states, but autonomy is limited to Utah
