High-dose niacin tested against glioblastoma: 82% progression-free at 6 months
The University of Calgary is running a Phase I/II trial of controlled-release niacin (vitamin B3) alongside standard chemo- and radiotherapy for glioblastoma. Among 24 patients, 82% had no cancer progression at six months, a 28% improvement over prior studies; the trial targets 48 participants with final analysis due in late 2026 or early 2027.
- Niacin rejuvenates immune cells suppressed by the tumor, mouse studies showed
- Trial continuation threshold was a 20% gain in 6-month progression-free survival
- 82% of 24 patients showed no progression versus the expected 54%
- High-dose niacin is toxic and requires strict medical monitoring
