OpenJDK bans AI-generated code but allows AI-assisted reading
OpenJDK's Governing Board approved an interim policy on April 9, 2026: contributions must not include code, text or images generated even partly by LLMs or diffusion models. AI may still be used privately to read, debug and review code, and to check draft JEPs and JavaDoc.
- Ban covers code, text and images in Git, PRs, email, wiki and the bug tracker
- Hand-editing AI output does not help: there is no substantial-transformation test
- AI review, debugging and code reading are allowed; AI-written submissions are not
- Main driver is the Oracle Contributor Agreement and unclear IP rights in AI output
