UBE2N enzyme protects liver as fatty liver disease worsens
Cedars-Sinai researchers identified the enzyme UBE2N, whose levels decline in liver cells as MASLD/MASH progresses. Restoring the enzyme in mice reduced fat accumulation, inflammation and scarring, making it a potential therapeutic target.
- UBE2N levels decline in the liver as MASH progresses
- Restoring the enzyme in mice cut fat, inflammation and fibrosis
- About 100 million people in the U.S. have MASLD
- 20–25% of MASLD patients develop the more severe MASH
