Colossal hatches chicks from a fully artificial egg without a shell
Colossal Biosciences has hatched live chicks from a fully artificial egg: a 3D-printed lattice shell with a silicone membrane that matches a natural eggshell's gas exchange at 21% oxygen. The company plans to use the platform for its de-extinction work on the South Island giant moa, extinct for over 600 years.
- Chicks hatched without a biological shell or enriched oxygen supply
- The membrane delivers as much oxygen as a natural chicken eggshell
- A moa egg is about 80 times the volume of a chicken egg, too large for any surrogate
- The lattice is 3D printed and designed for low-cost injection molding
