NASA advances Prima far-infrared space telescope mission
NASA is moving ahead with Prima (Probe Far-infrared Mission for Astrophysics), a new space telescope to observe the cold, dusty universe in the far-infrared band no current space telescope covers. Launch could come in the early 2030s, with the mission capped at $1.2 billion.
- Prima fills the blind spot between Webb and ground-based radio dishes
- Its 5.9-foot mirror and sensors will chill to hundreds of degrees below freezing
- Mission budget is capped at $1.2 billion, excluding the rocket launch
- Sensitivity could improve by about a factor of 1,000, said Jonas Zmuidzinas
