Sanders introduces bill to ban federal use of Flock
Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the Ban Flock Act, barring federal agencies from using automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) or accessing data collected by local police and private companies. Exceptions are limited to toll collection and future congressionally approved uses with data retention capped at 48 hours. Noncompliant states and localities would lose grants from five federal departments.
- Bill covers all ALPR systems, not just Flock
- Exceptions: toll collection and congressionally approved uses
- Data retention in exceptions capped at 48 hours
- Flock: over 120,000 cameras and 20B reads per month
