Anthropic engineer factors RSA-896 on 2,048 GPUs in 10 days
Steve Weis, a software engineer at Anthropic, factored the 270-digit RSA-896 using Claude and up to 2,048 idle GPUs in ten days. Cognition had factored RSA-260 sixteen days earlier. RSA-1024 is estimated at about $30 million per number, while RSA-2048 remains roughly a billion times harder, so 2048-bit keys are still safe.
- RSA-896 (896 bits) fell to about 30 GPU-years on up to 2,048 GPUs
- Cognition estimates RSA-1024 at roughly $30 million per number
- RSA-2048 is about a billion times harder, near $38 quadrillion
- No new algorithmic factoring improvements; 2048-bit keys remain safe
