Honeybee Silk Film Could Transform Chronic Wound Treatment
CSIRO and Adelaide University tested a biodegradable film made from engineered honeybee silk as a foundation for next-generation wound dressings. The material is safe, does not impede healing and gradually breaks down inside the wound, potentially reducing dressing changes.
- Honeybee silk film is safe and does not interfere with wound healing
- The material gradually degrades in the wound, reducing tissue disruption
- About 450,000 Australians develop chronic wounds each year
- Related healthcare costs exceed $6 billion annually
