Jacksonville police wrongfully arrest man based on facial recognition match
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested a 38-year-old man solely on a facial recognition match from FACESNXT after a sex offender used photos scraped from his Facebook to lure a minor. The man lost his job and custody of his children; it is the latest in a series of wrongful arrests in the area.
- FACESNXT, run by Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, holds about 15 million mugshots and 25 million driver's license photos
- 221 local, state and federal agencies have access to the system
- By law, a facial recognition match cannot be probable cause for arrest without corroboration
- In June, Jacksonville officers wrongfully arrested Jalil Richardson based on a false match
