MIT uses AI to keep mRNA vaccines stable for a year at room temperature
MIT researchers used machine learning to screen excipients and achieved one-year room-temperature stability for experimental mRNA lipid nanoparticles in preclinical tests. The algorithm screened nearly 50 FDA-approved excipients, compressing months of formulation work into weeks. Results were published in Nature Biotechnology on September 28, 2026.
- Particles stayed stable up to one year at room temperature after vacuum drying
- Stability held for two months at 37°C
- Algorithm screened nearly 50 FDA-approved excipients
- Vaccinated mice showed immune responses comparable to refrigerated standards
