ESP32 turned into a TCP proxy that tunnels traffic over MQTT
A developer released ESP-MQTTunnel, a working PoC that turns an ESP32 into a hardware proxy tunneling raw TCP traffic over an MQTT broker, bypassing firewalls without open ports or a public IP. Tested with an ESP32-S3, HiveMQ Cloud free tier and Firefox on Windows 10; TLS is relayed without interception.
- ESP32 subscribes to an MQTT req topic and opens real TCP sockets to target hosts
- Traffic relays through free HiveMQ Cloud with no TLS interception
- YouTube, Gmail, X and Reddit work; Instagram gets stuck
- Limited ESP32 resources prevent loading many tabs at once
