DESI Completes Five-Year Survey, Builds Largest 3D Map of the Universe
The DESI Collaboration has finished its first five-year survey, producing the largest high-resolution 3D map of the universe: over 47 million galaxies and quasars and 20 million stars spanning 11 billion years of cosmic history. The dataset is six times larger than all previous measurements combined and challenges the standard model of cosmology and the nature of dark energy.
- Map covers 47 million galaxies and quasars and 20 million stars
- Dataset is 6 times larger than all previous measurements combined
- First three years of data did not match the standard cosmological model
- DESI will keep observing until about 2028 with staggered data releases
