Telstra, Optus and Vodafone activate Temporary Disaster Roaming in Australia
Australia's three major mobile operators have activated Temporary Disaster Roaming (TDR), letting customers whose network is down after a natural disaster make calls, send texts and use basic data via another available network at no extra cost. Connection is automatic for most users once TDR is activated in a designated area.
- TDR activates in areas where another network has coverage and capacity
- The service is free and connects automatically for most customers
- Calls, texts, basic data, WhatsApp, iMessage and emergency apps remain available
- Operators coordinate activation through 24/7 network operations centres
