Shinko Beats Micron for Japan Display Factory to Build AI Chip Substrates
Japan Display agreed on September 30, 2026 to sell its shuttered Mobara plant in Chiba Prefecture to substrate maker Shinko Electric, ending a competitive sale that drew interest from Micron. Shinko plans to start flip-chip substrate production at the site in fiscal 2028 and use it to scale glass core substrates for AI accelerators.
- Mobara site spans about 373,000 sq m with over 100 MW of power and 179,000 sq m of cleanroom space
- Shinko keeps the 140,000 sq m eastern half; the 232,000 sq m western half goes to FICT
- Display production ended in November 2025; about 1,500 workers took voluntary separations
- Shinko is developing glass core substrates for AI chips in the 2028-2032 window
