Valve's Pyrowave codec for Steam Remote Play uses up to 500 Mbit/s
Valve introduced the Pyrowave codec for Steam Remote Play, which uses 5–10x more bandwidth (400–480 Mbit/s with HDR and 4:4:4) but cuts latency. It runs as Vulkan compute shaders on the GPU with encode and decode times of about 0.1 ms at 1080p and 0.2 ms at 4K. It is available in the Steam Client beta.
- Pyrowave uses 400–480 Mbit/s versus standard streaming codecs
- Encode and decode times: 0.1 ms at 1080p and 0.2 ms at 4K
- The codec skips motion prediction, compressing each frame independently
- Manual bitrate from 100 to 500 Mbit/s in the Steam Client beta
