Lab experiment explains strontium anomaly in ancient stars
Researchers led by Michigan State University measured the neutron capture rate of krypton-88 at Argonne National Laboratory's CARIBU facility. The new value resolved a long-standing mismatch between i-process models and observed strontium levels in ancient CEMP stars.
- Neutron capture rate of krypton-88, with a 2.8-hour half-life, was measured
- Experiment used the CARIBU facility and SuN detector via bromine-89 decay
- New data matched observed strontium levels in CEMP stars
- Findings published in Nature Communications Physics
