Wind turbines cut radar coverage by 7% and raise blind spots by 15%, study finds
A Chinese study found that offshore wind turbines interfere with shore-based radar: at ranges of about 5 km, effective coverage drops by up to 6.9% and blind spots grow by roughly 14.9%. Shadowing, clutter, multipath reflections and rotating blades create ghost targets and complicate vessel tracking.
- Radar coverage falls by up to 6.9% at 5 km range
- Blind spots increase by about 14.9%
- Shadowing, reflections and ghosting degrade radar picture
- US and UK have known of the issue since around 2004
