Amazon and Ring seek dismissal of Familiar Faces biometric privacy lawsuit

Amazon and Ring are asking a federal judge to dismiss a proposed class action over Ring's Familiar Faces facial recognition feature, arguing plaintiffs have not plausibly alleged their biometric data was collected. The companies also contend the suit improperly uses state consumer protection laws to create private biometric privacy claims not authorized by lawmakers in Washington, Virginia, and California. Judge Kymberly K. Evanson has not yet ruled.

• Familiar Faces is opt-in and off by default: up to 50 profiles, unnamed profiles deleted after 30 days
• Plaintiffs' opposition is due October 30; Amazon and Ring may reply by November 30
• The feature is unavailable in Illinois, Texas, and Portland, Oregon due to local legislation
