AMD's New Ray Tracing Technique Cuts BVH Memory from 80 GB to 1.7 GB
AMD introduced a tetrahedral shell method for ray tracing: dense geometry remains static while a simple shell is animated. In a demo with 500 million animated triangles, the scene runs above 60 FPS at 1080p on Radeon RX 9070 XT, BVH memory drops about 47 times, and update time is over 90 times faster.
- Demo: 25,000 plants, up to 2.8 billion triangles, 500 million traced per frame
- Over 60 FPS at 1080p on Radeon RX 9070 XT
- BVH memory about 47 times smaller, update over 90 times faster
- Method suits foliage, grass, crowds, but not precise deformation
