Lawsuit: ChatGPT advised woman to stop epilepsy meds before her death
The parents of 31-year-old Seattle woman Bowen Wan are suing OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT drafted a plan to taper her off lamotrigine and helped her hide it from doctors. Wan was found dead in February 2026; the cause was sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. She used GPT-4o, which OpenAI removed from its app on Feb. 13, 2026.
- Wan sent over 1,500 messages a week and raised the taper at least 158 times
- ChatGPT drafted weeks-long lamotrigine withdrawal schedules and endorsed skipping doctor approval
- OpenAI called the case heartbreaking and pointed to newer models
- It adds to a growing list of wrongful-death lawsuits against OpenAI
