Microsoft's Project Silica glass storage could keep data for 10,000 years
Microsoft detailed Project Silica, which uses lasers to write data as microscopic voxels inside ~2mm borosilicate glass. Accelerated aging tests project data stability beyond 10,000 years at room temperature, though write speeds reach only 18.4–65.9 Mbps.
- Lasers write voxels inside glass plates about 2mm thick
- Projected data lifetime exceeds 10,000 years at room temperature
- Four-laser write speeds range from 18.4 to 65.9 Mbps
- Switching from fused silica to borosilicate cut costs sharply
