NASA and Google test AI medical robot for deep space missions
NASA, its Johnson Space Center robotics team and JPL worked with Google Public Sector on a proof-of-concept robot that handles cargo and maintenance and can provide medical support to astronauts. The system, built on Physical Intelligence's open-source 4-billion-parameter Pi0 model, achieved an 85% baseline success rate in locating and moving a medical bag in lab tests.
- Built by NASA's Human Research Program, JSC Robotics Team and JPL with Google
- Mars communication delays of up to 44 minutes drive the need for autonomy
- The 4-billion-parameter Pi0 model was fine-tuned on Google Cloud G4 in 2.5 hours
- Robot located and moved a medical bag with an 85% success rate in tests
