ORNL commissions sub-ångström electron microscope for autonomous materials discovery
Oak Ridge National Laboratory has put a Thermo Scientific Spectra Ultra STEM into operation with sub-0.05 nm resolution. The instrument pairs two aberration correctors with a monochromator reaching under 0.025 eV energy resolution and is designed for AI-driven autonomous experiments.
- Microscope resolution reaches 50 picometers, below 0.05 nm
- X-FEG/UltiMono monochromator narrows energy spread to under 0.025 eV at 60 kV
- Accelerating voltage switches between 30 and 300 kV with a thermally stable lens
- Panther detector offers 16 independent channels for differential phase contrast
