White dwarf WD J1328–1450 hosts a double gas disc
Astronomers found two concentric gas rings around the white dwarf WD J132800.85–145019.95, extending from 0.14 to 0.34 and from 0.54 to 1.93 stellar radii. The gap between them is likely sculpted by two small bodies ranging from asteroid to Moon size. The study was published in Nature Astronomy.
- Two gas rings around the white dwarf are separated by a stable gap
- The inner ring spans 0.14–0.34 stellar radii, the outer one reaches 1.93
- Two bodies from asteroid to Moon size likely shape the disc structure
- Gas discs had previously been found around only 21 white dwarfs
