Artemis I finds lunar radiation only moderately above low Earth orbit
Data from Artemis I's Orion mannequins show radiation doses near the Moon are only moderately higher than in low Earth orbit. Lithium fluoride detectors from IFJ PAN recorded uniform body exposure and particle tracks below the threshold of earlier instruments.
- MARE detectors on Orion mannequins carried over 10,000 crystals
- Lunar doses exceed LEO levels but by less than expected
- Results differ from standard track detectors by no more than 15%
- Tracks below previous detection thresholds were recorded
