Vera C. Rubin Observatory shares test image of the Seagull Nebula
The Vera C. Rubin Observatory released a test image of the Seagull Nebula's head (IC 2177), about 3,700 light-years away. The shot was taken with the experimental 144-megapixel ComCam during hardware and software commissioning; the telescope now carries the 3,200-megapixel LSST Camera.
- The image was captured with the 144-megapixel ComCam
- The Seagull Nebula lies about 3,700 light-years from Earth
- Its 'eye' is the triple-star system HD 53367
- The LSST Camera shoots 3,200-megapixel frames every 30 seconds
