Bennu samples point to formation near the water-ice line
Isotope analysis of 0.5 g of asteroid Bennu material delivered by OSIRIS-REx in 2023 shows it matches Ryugu and rare CI meteorites. ETH Zurich researchers say Bennu formed near the water-ice line with Jupiter's help, not in the outer Solar System.
- OSIRIS-REx returned about 120 g of Bennu material in 2023
- ETH Zurich received 0.5 g and measured iron, titanium and chromium isotopes
- Bennu, Ryugu and CI meteorites share a similar isotopic fingerprint
- Jupiter may have acted as a barrier mixing inner and outer disk material
