150-million-year-old flightless bird with dinosaur teeth found in China
A remarkably preserved 150–148-million-year-old bird skeleton, Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis, was found in Fujian Province, China. It combines bird-like pelvis and hindlimbs with serrated deinonychosaur teeth and a sickle claw, and its limb proportions suggest it could not fly. The study was published in Nature.
- Fossil dates to 150–148 million years ago, Late Jurassic, crow-sized
- Retains serrated deinonychosaur teeth and a curved sickle claw
- Limb proportions match modern ground-dwelling birds, suggesting flightlessness
- Phylogeny places it in Avialae, near Archaeopteryx and Zhengheornis
