Keurig has brewed up a new kind of coffee pod: First look at the plastic-free Alta brewing system

Keurig will unveil the Alta system and AltaRounds pods in late September, which are plastic- and aluminum-free, fully compostable, and coated with a brown algae-based alginate. The device supports espresso and barista-style drinks and is backward compatible with standard K-Cups.

• AltaRounds contain no plastic or metal, fully compostable
• Brown algae-based alginate coating licensed from CoffeeB
• Initially six Keurig varieties, including two espressos and Peet's Coffee
• System backward compatible with K-Cups, on sale by end of year
