Google signs 1 GW virtual power plant deal with Voltus
Google has signed a deal with Voltus for a gigawatt-scale virtual power plant on the PJM grid, reportedly the largest such agreement by a hyperscaler. Voltus pays businesses and homeowners to cut electricity use at peak times; a 100 MW pilot in June was quickly oversubscribed.
- The VPP is 1 GW, ten times the 100 MW pilot announced in June
- It operates on the PJM grid, which faces major capacity constraints
- Voltus raised $225M in Series D and targets 20 GW by 2030
- A DOE report estimates VPPs could meet 10–20% of peak demand and save $10B a year
