Global Fishing Watch overhauls AI models, but 75% of fleet stays dark

Global Fishing Watch replaced its fishing detection and vessel classification models with a new generation trained on over 1,000 expert-reviewed examples. The upgrade is live across its map, APIs and data products from 2012 onward, but still covers only the 25–28% of industrial fishing vessels that broadcast their positions.
