Wikipedia editors estimate 15–20% of new articles are AI-generated

Ellia Lebleu, founding member of WikiProject AI Cleanup, told IEEE Spectrum how volunteers detect machine-written content on Wikipedia. Testing with detector Pangram flagged about 20% of new articles and drafts as AI-generated in late 2025, falling to 15–16% in early 2026. English Wikipedia has banned using LLMs to generate articles.
