Scientists race to destroy PFAS forever chemicals
PFAS are found above 2 ng/mL of blood plasma in 89% of the US population, and more than 12,000 of the compounds exist. Cleanup relies on reverse osmosis and foam fractionation, while Jack Huang's electrochemical degradation destroyed over 90% of PFAS mass in tests and has been licensed by AECOM.
- 89% of Americans have PFAS above 2 ng/mL of plasma, 9% above 20 ng/mL
- More than 12,000 PFAS compounds exist, but research covers only a handful
- Electrochemical degradation destroyed over 90% of PFAS mass in tests
- The EPA's 2010/2015 program cut PFOA releases by 95%
