US supercomputer Aurora models 13.4 trillion dark matter particles
Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory ran two of the largest cosmological simulations ever on the exascale supercomputer Aurora, modeling 13.4 trillion dark matter particles across a 28.6-billion-light-year region. Each calculation used about 50,000 GPUs and 8,100 nodes, with both runs and much of the analysis completed in roughly four days.
- Simulations covered a 28.6-billion-light-year region with 13.4 trillion particles
- Each run used 8,100 nodes and about 50,000 GPUs
- Both runs plus much of the analysis took about four days
- Over 85 PB of data generated, with about 8 PB kept for science
