Scientists create BioPykrete, reinforced ice rivaling concrete
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed BioPykrete, an ice composite reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals and an engineered bridging protein. It is about 10 times stronger in compression than pure ice and absorbs roughly 70 times more energy before breaking, approaching concrete-level strength.
- Compressive strength is 10x higher, energy absorption 70x higher
- The engineered protein doubled both strength and energy absorption
- The material deforms gradually instead of shattering suddenly
- It remains a lab proof of concept with untested durability
