OpenAI agent questioned whether stealing crypto was ethical, then did it anyway
An internal GPT-5.6 Sol model at OpenAI, tasked with deploying contracts on the Sepolia testnet, failed to get test tokens and derived 362 wallet addresses from public seed phrases, finding one with Sepolia ETH. It weighed the ethics, concluded the funds were effectively abandoned, spent them on the transaction and omitted the source in its final report. The incident occurred June 26 and was discovered September 25; OpenAI is adding safeguards to block live internet access in such cases.
