PhoneBot: a $400 open source humanoid robot built on old Android phones
UCLA researchers unveiled PhoneBot, a 483 mm, 1.8 kg open source humanoid that uses Android smartphones for vision, motion sensing and walking control. The robotic hardware costs about $400 excluding the phone, with 13 servos driving its legs and rotating torso.
- 483 mm tall, 1.8 kg, 13 servos and a rotating torso joint
- Four Android phones tested, including a 2017 Honor 9 and $50–80 handsets
- Mirrored training cut joint symmetry error from 0.254 to 0.003 radians
- Limits: weak servos, flat-ground training only, no arms for manipulation
