Review of 41 studies links air pollution to glaucoma and cataracts
A review of 41 studies covering millions of people in East Asia and the UK found that air pollution exposure is associated with higher risks of glaucoma and cataracts. The highest PM2.5 exposure was tied to 70% higher odds of glaucoma, while a rise in PM2.5 exposure was linked to 8% higher glaucoma odds and 4% higher cataract hazard.
- Highest PM2.5 exposure linked to 70% higher odds of glaucoma
- PM2.5 rise from 25th to 75th percentile: +8% glaucoma, +4% cataract hazard
- Evidence for age-related macular degeneration was less consistent
