Hitachi uses AI vibration sensor to spot train faults before breakdowns
At CEATEC 2026 Hitachi demonstrated the Perpetuum Onboard sensor, mounted on a train bogie, which detects mechanical wear from vibration patterns. The technology is part of the HMAX for Rail platform: about 2,500 trains already use it, and from 2027 all newly built Hitachi rolling stock, including ETR1000, will ship with HMAX sensors.
- Sensor attaches to the bogie and compares normal vs abnormal vibrations
- HMAX for Rail shifts maintenance from schedules to condition-based
- About 2,500 trains already use HMAX sensors, expected to reach 3,500
- From 2027 all new Hitachi rolling stock will include HMAX sensors
