Scientists name a new cat species for the first time in over a century

Genetic analysis identified a new species of tiger cat, Leopardus tilcayo, from the cloud forests of Bolivia. It diverged from other Leopardus species 1.4 million years ago; this is the first new cat species since 1923. A subspecies, L. tigrinus antisuyo, was also described from Peru.
