T&E: Real-world PHEV emissions six times official figures
T&E reports that 2024-model plug-in hybrids emit about six times their official CO₂ figures on the road, up from five times in 2023, adding up to €680 in annual fuel costs for drivers. Real-world emissions are only 14% lower than those of conventional combustion and hybrid cars, versus an 83% reduction in official tests. T&E urges governments to keep the next utility factor correction starting November 2026, which Germany wants to freeze.
- 2024 PHEVs emit about 6× official CO₂, up from 5× in 2023
- Drivers pay up to €680 more per year in fuel
- Real emissions only 14% below combustion and hybrids, not 83%
- Freezing rules would underestimate real PHEV emissions by 56%
