T&E: EU battery output far exceeds needs for UK EV exports as 2027 rules loom
T&E analysis finds EU battery production in 2027 will far exceed demand from EU-UK EV trade: six times for nickel-rich NMC and 2.4 times for LFP. From 1 January 2027, battery packs and cells must originate in the EU/UK to keep tariff-free trade under the TCA. ACEA is again seeking a delay, but T&E says the rules must apply on schedule.
- From 1 January 2027, battery packs and cells must originate in the EU/UK or have max 30–35% non-originating content
- Non-compliant products face a 10% tariff under the EU-UK TCA rules of origin
- EU NMC battery output will be 6x what UK exports need; LFP output 2.4x
- EU CAM supply will exceed UK export needs by over a third for both NMC and LFP
