Juno data reveals Jupiter's rippling, wavy magnetodisk
Analysis of NASA Juno data shows Jupiter's magnetodisk is not a smooth rotating sheet but crumples into a wave-like structure during magnetic reconnection events. Small reconnection sites span about 100 degrees of longitude and push the current sheet away from equilibrium.
- Juno normally crosses the magnetodisk current sheet twice per 9.9-hour rotation
- During reconnection events the probe detected the same magnetic signature almost every time
- Current-sheet ripples last from several minutes to over an hour
- Reconnection sites span about 100 degrees of longitude
