Scientists coat mitochondria with metal-organic frameworks without harming function
Researchers at FINCB and Politecnico di Milano applied thin metal-organic framework (MOF) coatings to mitochondria without disrupting their energy production. Published in JACS, the work could aid treatments for mitochondrial diseases and mitochondrial transplantation.
- MOF coating is applied in tiny amounts directly to the mitochondrial surface
- Coated mitochondria kept producing energy in tests
- Findings published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society
- Potential use: transplanting healthy mitochondria into cells
