Ofcom and JOINER to study satellite spectrum coexistence

UK regulator Ofcom has agreed to collaborate with the JOINER research platform to provide independent technical evidence for future satellite spectrum policy. The goal is to ensure LEO and GEO systems can coexist, improve spectrum efficiency and protect existing critical services.

• JOINER will supply Ofcom with independent data on spectrum sharing techniques
• LEO systems expand coverage but share bands with GEO TV and critical comms
• ITU spectrum-sharing rules date back over 20 years and may be revised
• JOINER combines hybrid cloud, edge computing and NTN emulators
