Apple Reference Image vs C2PA: Two Approaches to Photo Authenticity
Apple introduced Reference Image, a camera mode on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max that signs photos at the sensor level with a device-specific cryptographic key. Unlike the C2PA standard, which tracks a file's edit history, Apple verifies the physical origin of light before data reaches the OS.
- Reference Image works only on the main sensor of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max
- Signing happens before OS processing, protecting against pixel injection
- C2PA is supported by Leica, Samsung and Google, but Sony and Canon lag
- C2PA signing on the Nikon Z6 III was hacked and unfixed for over a year
